Swa Garden Restaurant (汕园) @ Macpherson Road

The literal translation of this place means ' teochew garden', where 'swa' is a chinese term refering to the region of Swatou ( in teochew) in China.

This is such an amazing old school place...I like the food there, authentic, unpretentious, and just the good old taste of  Teochew food.

Ambience is a bit 'hard-core' but nonetheless, the food is rather delectable to make up for the lack in ambience. Price-wise, always trust these old-school guys to whip up affordable delicious cuisine.

I looove old school restaurants...:)

The name

Fish Maw & crab meat soup - they do not scrimp on the ingredients, and the stock, the stock is delicious

Cold platter - I always love cold platter, love the ngoh hiang, the prawn balls, the jellyfish and century egg

Oyster Omelette - very yummy lah

Steamed Groupa - very nice and fresh

This dish is sooo exciting - its deep fried duck....its like my dream dish..

Braised duck with spinach - see the deep rich colour of the sauce....you know its delicious

One of my perennial favourites - fried kway tiao....yum yum yum

To satiate my nephew's crazy appetite, we order a lemon chicken....so nicely fried and very very crunchy

Yam paste dessert - I thought the pumpkin and gingko nuts were superflous...but the yam has a delicious flavour.

LiangKee Teochew Restaurant(亮记) @ Whampoa West

This joint is at the ground floor of my apartment, and it is always full during weekends....what more can I say.
Great delicious teochew food, also very affordable...would be great to try it as part of the teochew cooking education.

The chinese name of this restaurant.

Cold Dish - this is the traditional fare of meat prawn rolls, stir fried shark fin with eggs, fried tofu, cold jellyfish, & prawn salad ...very yummy lor.....

Yam Rice - I dun know how something with an insipid name like that can actually turn out to be sooo tasty..

Steamed Groupa - the Teochew people have a certain way of steaming fish, and the quality of the steamed fish is a good gauge of the food in the restaurant. And this fish is fresh!

The all famous braised duck and braised tofu

Stir Fried Bittergourd - this is not bad, but I think I can stir fried it pretty well too....I enjoyed the crunchiness of the bittergourd, and it is not too bitter as well.

Teochew Style Fried Rice Noodle - if you are in the know about Teochew Cuisine, this dish is one of those old school dishes that only old school restaurants do really well... Its incredibly yummy with the wok hei and amazing combi of vegetables and kway tiao....yum!

Beng Thin Hoon Kee Hokkien Restaurant (茗珍奋记) @ OCBC Center

Back with a vengence, because I have been seriously dining over the last few months...and really need to start recording them down...

This Hokkien food place is a rare gem that I would hesitate to share - marvellous food, great location, good ambience, no crowd, affordable prices......loved it!

This could be the epitome of Hokkien cuisine in Singapore

It apparently has a super long history, same age as my dad.

Cold dish - duck slices & jellyfish with cucumber & melon. Surprisingly refreshing with the hearty flavours of Hokkien cuisine.

Oyster Omelette - did I say this is the best oyster omelette I ever had in my entire life? Very fresh mini oysters, and fried to perfection egg & flour....really can't beat that.

Chestnut Braised Duck - it looks sort of unsophiscated, but the taste was so elegant and bursting all in once with the gaminess of duck, the nuttiness of the chestnuts and and wonderful wonderful dark sauce.

White cabbage braised with conpoy - This is soo yummy too. The cabbage is tender with waves of high grade chinese wine, i couldn't stop eating that.

Hokkien Meat & Prawn Rolls - Minimal prawns which is good for me, well seasoned and a surprise old school ingredient - liver....that makes this dish a wholly delectable one.

Hokkien Braised Noodles - this unlike the ones you get anywhere else, is very very well braised.....I can't describe the taste, but it certainly is the best in Singapore I reckon...

Braised Pork Belly meat with bun - simply old school and simply delicious.....the fatty bits melt in your mouth, and the sauce is soooo amazing...oh, did i mention my fetish for dark brown sauces....

Will be back there again to try the amazing array of Hokkien cusine!

West Coast Seafood @ West Coast Recreation Center

I have the fortune ( or rather misfortune) to be born in the family who obsesses about food, and my eldest sis, is the forerunner of exploring unknown restaurants which offers value for money food.

This place, again introduced by my grand dame sis, is so unknown that it is not packed on a weekend...but the food is completely yummy..... I was soo blown away with the food quality and the taste, and I supposed that the whole family is actually thinking of going there for Chinese New Year eve dinner.

Old school menu type 2: they laminated their menu....

Fish Maw Soup - very well done, enough portions of ingredients and delicious soup base. Plus they aren't too stingy with the fish maw....
though seriously, the best fish maw soup was from my belated Grandma, who would use luxurious portions of fish maw to add into the soup, and it would be filled with collagen ( her soup is clear)......Kudos to all grandmas..I missed you.

Deep fried Yam Ring: this comes with a twist, you get to choose the ingredients inside, this time round, we had coffee spare ribs....nice and tender.

Deep fried white bait : this is done in a Hong Kong style, with deep fried garlic, chilli & scallions ( a la Bi Feng Tang style). Its alright, I wasn't too blown away by this one.

Kam Mon Gai : Flattened chicken , but again with a twist. They coat almonds on the underside of the flattened chicken, and you are to eat it a la Peking Duck Style, with egg crepes, cucumbers & hoisin sauce.

Braised Tianjin Cabbage : Don't be misguided by the plainness of this dish, the stock is exceptionally yummy. Cabbage is soft and not limpid...I really enjoyed this.

Braised Bee Hoon - This has got to be the best Braised Bee hoon in town...it looks so plain and unappetizing...but it really really taste great...totally bowed over by this dish..

Braised Homemade tofu - Tofu is good, but the braised sauce is divine. I think this place have a special way of concocting its base stock. Any of the dishes which uses this base stock is just absolutely delicious.......

KaSoh@Amoy Street

It was a dinner with my one of ex-girl-gang from HK, who is currently based in Sydney, and with her sister and her GF, and also another friend of ours.....

Since she is missing Singaporean Chinese food....we decided to go for Ka Soh ( local, decent, & in town) instead of chi chi dining places. Location was great coz we hop to the Library afterwards and had a full blown whisky night :)...and that is another story.

Very old school menu with the paper in plastic folders...

Prawn Paste Chicken - this is very yummy....moist on the inside and crispy on the outside.

Seafood Deep Fried Bean Curd - I know....a lot of deep fried stuff, but this is very yummy too.....

Sambal KangKong - though this is average, I actually enjoyed eating it. The wok hei really does gives it a certain complexity in taste

Ginger Frog Legs - I am such a big fan of frog meat, and this taste great!

Fish Meat Bee Hoon Soup - though this is supposed to be the signature dish....somehow, it is lacking in a bit of dimension. I much prefer the taste of soup in Maxwell market just a few blocks away........nonetheless, the fish is fresh....seems like the rest of the dishes are getting much better than the main one...

Moi Lum @ Murray Terrace

Moi Lum is a true blue cantonese joint, serving great cantonese food filled with delicious stock that is reminiscence of my HK days.....love the food & love the price......not elegant nor delicate, but you can definately taste the wok hei in this resto.

The signature - love restaurants who customized their own wet towels.....shows that they have been in the market long enough and successful enough to warrant investing in this....

Crispy Chicken - to be eaten with chilli sauce or salt/pepper mixture. Loved the roasted texture

Nai Bai with Homemade tofu - also yummy...

Deep fried eggplant with Pumpkin Puree with crab roe on top, fantastic combi

Deep fried white bait

Seafood Cabbage rolls with roe

 Braised Ee Fu noodles

JuChunYuan @ Far East Square (聚春园)

Always walked past this restaurant with a rather classy interior, and always wanted to try it. Its a chinese restaurant, and definately needs a big crowd to be there.

Food is Fuzhou chinese food and they are supposedly famous for their "buddha jumps over the wall". Didn't quite like these overtly luxurious dishes so we ordered a few a la carte specialities.. To our surprise, food is very tasty  and rather unusual...and completely unpricy. Its a definate must try...not to mention that the restaurant is done up rather elegantly.

Was especially captivated by the array of teapots, and delicate porcelain ware.

Chicken Soup - This has got to be the best double-broiled chicken soup I ever had.
The chef  stir fried the chicken before setting it in a pot for the double-broiled effect. Very yummy.

Cod Fish & Tofu Claypot - loved the homemade tofu, though the fish and sauce were good but not amazing or mind-blowing. Overall still a good dish.

Tea-mushrooms fried in egg yolk - very very yummy dish and really loved this combination

Hong Zao Pork Rib - the red sauce is a special fuzhou sauce, and tasted very good...but I did not quite fancy the way the pork rib was prepared.

Special Fuhou braised noodles - very very yummy, with the aroma of good rice vinegar

Heng Hua Beehoon - this looks simple and almost unappetizing....but this has got to be one of the best fried beehoon in my entire life. There is a special sauce to give it somme 'ooomph"

Deep fried pork belly slice - tasted almost like you are eating pork chips.....interesting flavours...though I will wanna try their house special - braised pork belly...the next time

Their desserts are good too - Snow Mountain lotus

Mango with Pomela ( Yang Zhi Gan Lu) - this version is lighter with more citrus notes.

Yam Paste - loved this dish , the yam was really smooth and very aromatic, and loved the mini portions compared to the TeoChew Version.

It is  crab season in this resto....but the crabs are pretty pricy...I say: go to shanghai to have Da Zha Xie.
