Hakata Dojo Hotpot at TST Fern Center

What better activity than to eat hotpot in winter.....these days Hong Kong is too cold...and Hotpot just sounds good. This one is made of ...beef offal...yes did I say that I was a big fan of offal..? The soup base taste like a thick miso ramen soup base...very flavourful..but a tad salty though. The other dishes are very good and interesting too. I guess this being Kyushu cusine is something a little bit special. Its a place that I would definately go again!

The restaurant interior

This is the exact name of the restaurant, no english translation

The famous Hakata Beef Offal Hotpot

Daikon Salad - loved the crispy bits and the fresh veges.

egg with Mentaiko

Gyoza hot plate - gyozas here are very good...

Yakitori - they have a good range of Yakitori here...and done quite well...

Hama - K11 mall TST

It was a hot steamy Sunday afternoon, and I decided to try Hama with a friend who used to live in Japan. Hama's Lunch set serves sashimi bowls....The standard of food is really great for Hong Kong, Sashimi is really fresh, and I must say the vegetables used in the salads are really fresh too. The only peeve, is that the soba is really just so -so....Otherwise, for the price and quality of food, it is very very well worth the visit...I would want to go there again if I step into TST.

Restaurant Logo

Doesn't look like anything, but the vegetables is really fresh with a dash of yuzhu soya sauce as salad dressing

Lovely 3 coloured sashimi bowl - salmon, tuna and hamachi! I love also the ikura and shrimp roe on top...

My friend's dish - seafood bowl - lovely fresh sashimi, and really beautiful presentation

Chawan Mushi - not too bad

Soba dish - its so so, but nice to end a meal with some carbo....

SuperStar Restaurant @ TST

SuperStar is a chain Cantonese restaurant specialising in live seafood, hairy crabs and the works. The one I have tried this time for dim sum is along Nathan Road, just right across the street from Chung King Mansion. Well, foodwise, the dim sum selection is not too novel, comprising of mainly traditional dim sum. For me, it falls within the average range ( well dim sum in HK is generally of a high quality), but they don't do traditional dim sum in the style of Lin Heung or Maxims at Quarry Bay, and they are not the new types of dim sum as you can find in the Square.. I think it is alright, but not exceptional. The Lau Sa Bao is pretty good though..

Roasted Duck with Rice noodles - Roast duck (average), soup (average) rice noodles ( nice and chewy)..but I personally always like dishes like that...so I still kinda like it.

Crab Meat Xiao Long Bao - there is only one serving, and the friend who ate it thinks that the skin is too thick

Steamed Rice rolls- this one have an interesting filling - mushrooms, zuchini and scallops. This is not bad too.

Stewed Tripe - this is surprisingly very good!

Deep fried beancurd sheet rolls, with pork and shrimps filling. It is alright. The very delicious Lau Sa Bao, I took really bad pictures of it, so it is not posted onto the blog.

Peanut Roll- average

Chang Won Korean Restaurant

Trying out new restaurants in TST, and yes, there are many many Korean restaurants around that area. This one isn't particularly good, and the interior looks a bit sad and musty. The only highlight is their Korean pancake, which is crispy and delicious...due to the lack of Korean customers there...I concluded that this is not really the real deal.

the name of the restaurant

Again - the appetizers 12 of them in total!

Bibimbup - looks great, but actually not so tasty

grilled mackerel -but not too good either

This is really good - only the seafood pancake is delicious

soup- I find the style a bit too chinese

Tan Yu Tou ( 谭鱼头)at TST

Me and friends wanted to go to the famous hotpot place in TST ..but we waited and waited...and finally after 1 hour of waiting, we gave up and went to Tan Yu Tou.....compared to Xiao Fei Yang, I have to admit the soup is much more tastier, but our hotpot is too slow to cook and we were hungry...
It is a 2 hour eat all you can...but after an hour..it gets a bit tough..good hotpot in general..but it is not the king of hotpot like i envisage...good on a winter's night.. I really wouldn't mind going back again when HK have the chills

the sauce which you have to put a bit of soup inside

Not showing the raw food ingredients, but this is interesting, it is beancurd roll ( with meat inside) deep fried and which you cook it till it becomes hot and soft..I like

Fish Paste - this one turn out to be quite like Fish Balls Singapore Style

Fried Fish Skin - really so good to put it inside the hotpot, I think Xiao Fei Yang doesn't have that .

There is the most important picture - the white fish soup is delicious and the spicy soup is great too...and not too spicy that you won't taste anything after one sip..

kikuzen at Harbour City TST

This is the trend of japanese food in Hong Kong, I called it fusion Jap food...not that some are not good...but it sometimes almost taste like a hybrid Cantonese Japanese taste....more like the popular japanese snack food...Kikuzen is this kind of set-up, but the taste is not so bad...it is pretty complex and the stock is very good as well...but again not the best...good to try and go for a relatively good meal...but a little too expensive for the type of food served

Seared Maguro Salad - its snacky kind of nice...though the maguro lacks a bit of intensity

seafood soup in tea-pot : I always loved to order this..it is surprisingly good...the stock being rich and hearty

Dragon maki - anything with soft shell crabs is kinda good...see it is really a japanese snack kind of japanese restaurant- no serious japanese food...but they do this bubblegum popular food quite well

Hand Made udon soup - comes with tempura ( see next picture) Dashi broth is quite good and rich...udon texture -so so only

Tempura is well done - but I prefer Agehan's tempura..

Grilled Eel - again a very difficult dish to make...the portion is large..but the grilled eel have no refinement or surprise...and sauce is a bit too sweet...another sympton of bubblegum japanese cusine

Santouka Ramen, I Square

I love ramen, and consider myself a sort of expert on them. Ramen should be judged by the texture of noodles and the depth of the broth , mainly... The one from Santouka seems to have the right base and the texture of the noodle is chewy yet firm ( which I like a lot too), the broth is rich and very garlicky( which I like), but I think they put a tad too much MSG, and there wasn't the amazing after taste of soup base ( whether it is Pork Bone soup,Kelp etc) in your mouth after the bowl has been finished. It is tasty, but not that great. The gyoza is not bad, and probably would suffice for a quick dinner. I guess for Hong Kong, it is already not bad...

Gyoza - the skin is thin, and the meat inside fresh

House of Jasmine (八月居)

This is one of Maxim's chain in Harbour City in TST. Food is a fusion of Shanghaiese and Cantonese cusine.
It offers a great view of a harbour and is definately a good place to bring visiting friends. The food there is above average, exceptional dishes are the roasted meat which are a mainstay of Maxim's restaurant and the dishes are presented beautifully. Do try the huge variety of jasmine tea, which is aromatique and refreshing.
The desserts are average, but in general good.

lotus root amuse & jasmine tea

GuiFei Chicken Soup - Nice deep flavour

Sour & Spicy Soup - average though...

House specialty - Spring Rolls, it is a must-try

This is an amazing vegetarien dish - mixed mushrooms with bamboo plinth with stock sauce

Roasted meat combi - the goose is good, but the roast pig and char siew is magnifique!

Another great vegetarien dish - aparagus in pumpkin puree.

almond dessert - I love the little chou next to it...
