KeeWai @ King's Road (奇味)

One of my last nights in HKG, and we decided to do local.....this place , though uncomparable to my fav Gresson street joint, got a flavour of its own. Food's got wok hei taste, and is generally clean for a HKG dai pai dong restaurant. Not bad as an alternative to Gresson street if you are staying in Taikoo/ Quarry Bay area.

Menu & name

Salted egg yolk with prawns - this is their signature dish. I couldn't eat prawns...but they sure looked yummy

Spare ribs - slightly tough but flavourful nonetheless...

Deep fried fish with sweet sour sauce - I find this ok...the fish not super fresh

Spinach with egg white & roe - not bad lah....I like the crab roe on top of veges...

Fish meat patties -This is pretty good, shunde style with water chestnut bits inside

Claypot Frog meat - I love frog meat, and almost finish this dish on my own....the bamboo shoots in the claypot is a real bonus too!! Yum!

Hotpot Instinct @ 18 Tanner Road North Point

Its Hotpot Season! With the stupid temperatures dipping every other week, nothing better to keep you warm than nice warm soup and loads of goodies....so what do I look out for in hotpot , there are so many around town - soup, sauce, freshness of ingredients, exhaust and airconditioning ( yes, some restaurant makes you smell like hotpot ), and whether there are any interesting things to dip inside the hotpot......so I rate this place pretty good...quite new, a huge selection of ingredients, and make your own sauce...on top, the AC works damn well.

Chinese Name

So many things to make your sauce from!

fish skin - I love it, a must have in every hotpot

All the deflatable things!

dumplings of all sorts

Fish paste on fried doughstick

fried wonton

the full array of food

bubbling soup- we had a peppery one, and a slightly sweet one, it is a refreshing change from the usual spicy/chicken stock version..they have quite a lot of combination soups to choose from..cool!

ZhuJiaCai @ Lee Theater CWB

tasty home cooked food...I found the portions too big though...not the most refined Cantonese cusine around..but it is good simple food with loads of flavour...

The menu with loads of dishes

Kailan with eggs done in 3 ways - century egg, salted egg & normal egg

sweet & sour pork - like!

prawns in garlic - apparently, it is sooo good, but I can't eat prawns

steamed egg - soft and wobbly....

steamed pork patty with preserved vegetable - i really like this one

pork ribs in pumpkin - it is supposed to be the special winter dish...i say skip it...too rich, and not flavourful enough...

SangKee , 107-115 Hennessy Road

I had my office dinner party there, and we finished 90 bottles of beers...till the restaurant ran out of beer...anyway, this is good old cantonese food at its rawest form. No reservation, no niceties, just uncle waiters serving a range of old time customers. This is a real Hong kong establishment, for those in the know...I like the food very much, there is an authenticity to it, which you don't find in many new Chinese restaurant. You can definately taste the wok-hei here.

The stuff that makes the soup

the soup - I don't know what it is called!

carp meat patties - this is the best i have ever tasted so far

Deep fried eggplants with chilli and garlic - yum

Salt roasted chicken

Salt and scallion big head prawns

Gu lo Yok

Lotus root with braised pork kunckles

potato leaves with pig's liver

Minced meat with Choy Sum

XiYue (八月坊)@ Taikoo Shing

This place is just packed everyday...reservations are two weeks in advance...and is it worth the value? It is very good cantonese food, high quality, and pretty innovative...I wouldn't say it is the best I had..but it is pretty good.. They do Dim sum & cantonese food. Would recommend definately for a big group of friends for a gossipy chinese lunch/dinner...This is a Maxim's group restaurant and they also do Jasmine house (六月居)-see previous blog entry

Appetizer

This chain of maxim's restaurant really serves good tea

Crab meat wrapped with noodle  - interesting but not fantastic

stir-fried pea-shoot with mushrooms

Prawn Dumpling soaked in soup - yum

Vegetable Dumpling - yum

Hum Shui Ko - yum yum

Chestnut Jelly - battered and deep fried ..very nice

Ee- Fo Mee with Crab and Crab roe...this is really really good

Famous roast suckling pig - the skin is sooo wonderfully crispy...my legs wobble for this....

XiangLi Fan Dian @ Triangular Street, Wanchai

This has been a month of non-stop Cantonese food dinners..XiangLi Fan Dian (祥利饭店)was apparently really famous, and as Triangular street is not that long, it is really easy to find. You can see newspapers clippings of the restaurant just on the shopfront.

Food - most dishes were amazing, it is one of those places, which looks super crappy, but the Cantonese cusine is a bit more hearty and complex. I think it is almost on par with my Gresson Street Restaurant ( see my other post on 群众小厨), the dishes are quite unsual and exciting too! Definately worth it if you can take the crappiness of the surroundings.

The signboard

Kailan with minced meat in claypot - looks like a strange dish, but really it is very good

A typical Cantonese dish - deep fried Aubergines in bifengtang style...really good, and I always love this dish

Stewed pork ribs with onions - its good its good..the sauce is soo nice...

Oyster Omelette - its so so ,  I still prefer Oyster Omelette Singaporean Style...

Chicken poached in exotic sauce - I called it exotic sauce because I didn't know what it is, but it is herbal and very very very delicious

initially, we had high expectations of this dish - supposedly their signature dish...but it is a tad sad,the deep fry was crispy, but the squid inside taste rubbery...dun order this!
